Elder Care Expands Caregiver Support with New Open Door Café

Elder Care is proud to announce the expansion of its caregiver support services, thanks to a Respite Grant through OKCare’s program with the State of Oklahoma. This funding enables Elder Care to enhance its caregiver support group and introduce a new, non-traditional support model—the Open Door Café—providing caregivers with vital resources, respite, and community connection.

Launching on March 20, Open Door Café will occur every Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. This non-traditional, come-and-go support group offers caregivers a welcoming café space to relax, share experiences, and enjoy coffee. Caregivers can bring their loved ones with them to enjoy the space and engage in activities in the next room if they would like. Shelia Tucker, Dementia Practitioner, will be present to provide guidance, caregiver support, and engaging activities.

“With the diagnosis of any type of dementia, it is easy to focus on the perceived closed doors,” said Shelia Tucker. “One of the goals of Elder Care is to assist caregivers in finding and sometimes creating open doors.”

This grant represents more than just additional resources—it’s a lifeline for caregivers who often feel isolated and overwhelmed. By expanding support services, Elder Care is reinforcing its commitment to caregivers, offering essential tools to navigate their journey with confidence. Whether it’s a quiet moment at the Open Door Café, the joy of discovering meaningful activities with a loved one, or the relief of a few hours of respite at DayBreak Adult Day Health, these new offerings provide critical relief and support.

Additional Caregiver Resources

In addition to Open Door Café, Elder Care is introducing several new caregiver support initiatives aimed at enhancing well-being and easing the challenges of caregiving. Activity kits will be available for caregivers, offering engaging and stimulating activities for individuals with Alzheimer’s or dementia, helping to foster meaningful interactions at home. To encourage caregivers to prioritize their well-being, Elder Care will also provide self-care kits, offering tools and resources for stress relief and relaxation. Furthermore, caregivers attending support groups will have access to expanded respite hours at DayBreak Adult Day Health at no cost, allowing them time for personal needs such as running errands, exercising, or simply enjoying a meal with a friend, knowing their loved ones are safe and engaged. Additionally, Elder Care is enhancing its social and wellness programs, creating more opportunities for caregivers to connect, participate in activities, and focus on self-care, with respite services available during select events.
