SUMMARY:Jerry Poppenhouse Art on Display
DESCRIPTION:The Jerry Poppenhouse collection of photographs on canvas art was donated to Elder Care to be used to benefit our programs. \nNine of the 73 pieces on display will be included in a 2023 online auction. All proceeds benefit Elder Care. Following the close of the in-person exhibit at the BCC on January 29\, 2023\, the online auction will continue until February 14\, 2023. No in-person bidding. \nThis fundraiser is made possible through the generous support of the Bartlesville Community Center and Jerry Poppenhouse. \n\n\n\nOnline Auction \n\nAbout Jerry Poppenhouse\nPoppenhouse worked as a creative photo designer for Phillips Petroleum Co. in Bartlesville. His work for Phillips has taken him worldwide and brought him face-to-face with international celebrities. \nHe has observed tribal rituals of African natives and battled minus-85-degree temperatures in Alaska. He’s been buffeted by 60-foot waves in the North Sea and blinded by the darkness of the Amazon jungle in Peru. All for the sake of visual recording. \nAnd he has photographed Luciano Pavarotti\, Walt Disney\, Robert Redford\, and a wealth of intriguing faces. \n\nHe has received the Chicago Award of Excellence\, the Cine Golden Eagle\, the United States Industrial Silver Screen Award\, the American Advertising Federation Award\, the Graphex Proclamation in Photography\, the Addy Award for Excellence in Advertising\, and the Oklahoma Film and Television Producers Association Gold Award.

SUMMARY:Seniors Connect: Paint & Sip Party
DESCRIPTION:“No skills required” painting party: Team-building & friendship experience! Includes materials and light refreshments. Open to all adults. Payment is needed at registration and includes all materials. \nRegister Here \nAbout Valerie Unruh\nFine Art Portraits\, Landscapes\, and Still Life \nValerie Unruh began her journey of being an artist when she was a young teenager.  She started out with oils\, moved to pen and ink\, included some wood burning along the way\, and met up with graphite and colored pencils in her early twenties.  She is now an artist who uses many mediums to render what the subject requires.  She primarily works with acrylics\, but occasionally paints with oil.  She is predominately a self-taught artist but has also learned from numerous professional artists. \nIn 2021\, Valerie completed 9 murals for the City of Collinsville.  Eight of those murals are on utility boxes along Main Street in Collinsville\, OK.  One mural is of a large butterfly on a garage door in their City Plaza. \nValerie is also an instructor of fine art.  She believes that all things are created uniquely.  As she instructs others\, she notices that each individual sees things differently.  We can all be drawing the same subject\, but each person’s rendition is totally different.  Oh\, we all have those artists whose work we so admire.  We try to do exactly how they instruct and it never turns out the same. She allows each individual to create a piece how they see it and not how she sees it. \nOne of her favorite quotes by Paul Gardner is ~ A painting is never finished – it simply stops in interesting places. \n She was born and raised in Ulysses\, Kansas.  She now resides in Claremore\, Oklahoma.  She has taught classes for Elder Care in Bartlesville since 2009.  She is a past art show judge for the Verdigris Valley Art Exhibit in Independence\, KS.  She has judged several student art shows in the area.  She is a past board member of the Bartlesville Art Association.  She owns The Artist’s Retreat in Collinsville\, OK where she teaches classes to all ages. \n  \nPainting parties are fabulous team-building experiences.\n– Angie Thompson\, Development Director

SUMMARY:Learning to Speak Alzheimer's Book Review
DESCRIPTION:Marilou Bork\, one of the founders of Elder Care\, will present a book review at Elder Care on Thursday\, August 24. She will be discussing Learning to Speak Alzheimer’s written by Joanne Koenig Coste. \nBork will cover the practical insights that author Coste shares about Alzheimer’s disease. Topics include: coping with the diagnoses and adjusting to the progression of the disease\, helping the patient talk about the illness\, facing the issue of not driving and how to deal with wandering\, paranoia and aggression. \nAfter hearing the concerns and questions that Alzheimer’s disease can bring to families\, friends\, and the patients suffering from this disease\, I think this is a timely book that needs to be shared\,” says Bork.  “Sometimes we avoid a friend who has Alzheimer’s due to our own discomfort. This book can help us feel more comfortable in communicating with those with the illness and help reduce the patient’s fear and isolation. \nIt is estimated that more than 6 million Americans of all ages have Alzheimer’s. An estimated 6.7 million Americans age 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s in 2023. Seventy-three percent are age 75 or older. About 1 in 9 people age 65 and older (10.7%) has Alzheimer’s. \nBork is a licensed clinical social worker who has worked in the field of aging for over 30 years. She has a Masters of Social Work from the University of Oklahoma. Bork was one of the original founders of Elder Care in 1983 and has since worked primarily in the mental health field. \nThe Learning to Speak Alzheimer’s book review is part of Elder Care’s 2023 “Alzheimer’s in our Community” seminar series. \nFree Attendance.
